Most night suits give you one outfit. This one gives you four pieces that mix into several, which is the whole reason to buy a set rather than a pair.

What is in the box

• Short-sleeve button shirt — notched collar, full button placket, chest pocket, cut loose through the body
• Full-length trousers — elasticated waist, straight leg, sits at the natural waist
• Strappy cami — V neckline, adjustable straps, cut to sit under the shirt or on its own
• Matching shorts — elasticated waist, mid-thigh

How it actually gets worn

Shirt and trousers in winter. Cami and shorts in summer. Shirt worn open over the cami and shorts on a spring night, or thrown on over the cami to answer the door. That last combination is the one most people end up living in, and it is why the shirt is cut a little loose rather than fitted.

The fabric

Soft satin-finish sleepwear fabric with a light drape and a low sheen. It slides rather than clings, does not hold heat the way brushed cotton does, and comes out of the wash without needing a press if you shake it out and hang it damp.

Prints

• Red Heart — small scattered hearts on white, no trim
• Sage Floral — soft green botanical print on ivory, no trim
• Ivory Floral — grey-and-black botanical on ivory, finished with black lace trim at the sleeve, hem and shorts

Fit notes

The set is cut relaxed, not oversized. If you like sleepwear loose, size up once — the shirt will read as a boyfriend fit and the trousers will sit lower. Both waists are elasticated, so the trousers and shorts forgive more than the shirt does.

Worth knowing before you buy

Satin-finish fabric snags on rough nails, velcro and unsanded bed frames — the black lace trim on the Ivory Floral is the most vulnerable part of the set. Wash the set inside out in a mesh bag, cold, and skip the fabric softener; softener sits on satin and dulls the sheen over a few washes.

Care

• Machine wash cold, gentle cycle, inside out
• Do not bleach
• Tumble dry low or hang dry
• Cool iron on the reverse if needed
• Wash darks separately for the first two washes
